USoc exported XML is used as input for parse_understanding_society. Archivist tables are produced as the output and then used as inputs for archivist_insert. XML is produced as the output.

  • Ensure the most recent version of the questionnaire for inputting the changes/updates into Archivist
  • Loops - Are loops correctly labelled? Is loop variable appropriate? Are Min, Max and loop while fields correctly entered?  Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • Conditions - is label correct? Is condition text and logic correct?   Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • Check that levels of nesting of conditions and qcs are correct.  Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • Check condition texts for repeated conditions that can be separated and then remaining portion of conditions can be nested inside the repeated condition.  Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • Check that Don’t know, Refused and Missing have been added as categories to questions where these responses are referred to in subsequent conditions. Add this to usoc covid too? (js - actually this should be a note for all capis as this comes up in other studies than USoc. So remove and add to general capi page) agree(sw)
  • Change response domains for questions asking about ‘Other’ from Generic text to Other response domain. (js - I think this could be moved to general capi page as all capis need checks for questions that are about 'Other' things having Other as an answer.) agree (sw)
  • Check cardinality of codelists.  Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • Check codelists contain correct values and categories and that they are in the correct order?  Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • qc/qi labels include the sequence and study wave in their labels. Check that qc/qi labels refer to the correct sequence and wave.
  • Check interviewee for instances where it needs to be changed to Interviewer or Proxy.  Remove? (Agree- js, sw)
  • Watch for month, year questions that need text, and sometime instructions, from month question concatenated onto the year question.  Remove? (Agree - js. When moving to general capi page add note that order of questions could be Year and then Month and text needs to be concatenated to month question.) agree (sw)
  • For questions with a ‘How many’ response domain answer, look for a Range response domain to use instead by checking the xml for current instrument and prior waves and/or in Archivist looking at the same/similar questions in prior waves.
  • Check that question literal and instruction texts have been input correctly. There may be instruction text that should be in the literal and vice versa.  Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • Check for text in question literals that can be deleted from question and added as a statement before the question. Remove? (Agree - js, sw)
  • Entire Proxy section should be entered inside a loop, as Proxy questions may be answered for more than one missing household member.
  • If there is a missing response domain, check the previous waves to see if it's included and use that.  Remove? (js - not sure. As far as I know USoc is the only study where we extrapolate answers from a previous wave to a later wave) If this is specific to usoc we should leave it here (sw)PDF is being used (check the PDF we have against the study website).
  • There are two versions of the questionnaire in one (web mode and telephone mode. Do not add questions or sections based on telephone mode.
  • The correct sequence and study wave is included in the qc/qi labels.
  • If there is a missing response domain, check the previous waves to see if it's included and use that.
  • Create specific numeric response domains where possible. Search for the question in the XML to see if there is a min and max. If no "min" and "max" is shown in XML file, use "How many" (see Example 1).
  • Do not enter mixed-mode interviewer instructions (see Example 2).

  • Do not enter soft or hard checks.
  • Note that question literals and code list categories containing { } brackets do not translate correctly into Archivist - please copy and paste the correct question literal or code list manually (issue under review).
