How to record a lecture using MS Teams

Whether you are recording an in-class lecture, or if you want to make a long recording of an online meeting, there are options in Microsoft Teams.

Good to know:

  • If you are using your laptop to record, you can connect your laptop using either the VGA or HDMI lead in the teaching space. Read more via AV Guidance.

  • All recordings made in Microsoft Teams will be stored on your Microsoft Stream

Setting up your virtual room:

  1. Open up the Microsoft Teams app (this may take a few seconds to appear after you first log onto a class PC)

  2. Before starting a recording, check your video & audio settings. To do so, click on the "..." dots next to your profile picture. Then Settings > Devices. Depending whether you are using the desktop or your own personal device in the lecture room, the device settings will vary. Desktops are usually set by default.

  1. Select the Calendar button displayed down the left-hand side

  1. In the top-right, select Meet now from the options available

  1. Name the recording and click Start meeting

  1. Optional If you're recording anything with music, or classroom discussions, we recommend that you turn Noise Suppression off. By default, Teams will try to filter out background noise and focus on the main speaker.

You can find this by going to Computer Audio > Audio Settings > Noise Suppression

  1. Enable your microphone

  1. Enable your web camera (Not all lecture rooms are equipped with web cameras, please check Equipment List)

  1. Click on Join now to start your virtual meeting

How to share your screen:

  1. Click on Share to share your screen if you’d like to present presentation slides or other teaching materials

  1. Optional You can enable Include Sound if you’d like your computer sound to be shared. For example, If you are planning to share videos with the students, then you would need to enable this setting in order for the students to hear the sound from the video

  1. In the next setting, you can choose how to share your screen. Screen refers to sharing your full screen and Window will share only a specific window from your browser or application

  1. Next to your profile picture, select the "..." button

How to record:

  1. You can record the session by selecting More > Record and transcribe > Start a recording

  1. When you are finished, select More > Record and transcribe > Stop recording

  2. By default, this recording will be saved into your Recordings folder in OneDrive, which will only be available to you. You can view the video on your Microsoft Stream Start Page to update the sharing permissions
