Group Submissions using Moodle Assignment

Group Submissions using Moodle Assignment

Groups and groupings provide a way to organise students within your course. In addition to allowing you to restrict access to specific resources and activities in Moodle, groups can support collaboration and structured group work.

This guide explains how to create and configure a Moodle assignment to enable group submissions.

Enable Group submission on a new Moodle assignment

Step 1 - Create groups of students

For guidance on setting up groups, see: M13 - Groups and groupings.

Step 2 - Create a Moodle assignment

Create your assignment in Moodle as usual. For detailed guidance, see: Creating a Moodle assignment.

Step 3 - Configure Group submission settings

  1. Open the assignment and go to Settings.

  2. Scroll to the Group submissions settings section.

  1. Set Students submit in groups to Yes. When this option is enabled, each group submits a single shared assignment. All group members can view and edit the same submission, and any changes made by one member are visible to the rest of the group. When a grade or feedback is provided for one group member, it is automatically applied to and visible to all members of that group.

  2. Configure Group submission settings as required:

  • Require group to make submission - If enabled, students who are not members of a group will be unable to make submissions.

  • Require all group members to submit - This can be set to no if a nominated student within the group will submit on behalf of the entire group. If this option is enabled, the setting Require students to click the submit button must also be enabled.  All group members will then need to click the ‘Submit’ button for the group submission to be acknowledged as submitted.

  • Grouping for student groups - A grouping is a logical structure that contains one or more groups.  Select (or create) a grouping that contains only the collection of groups that you want to include in the group assignment. We recommend creating a new grouping for each assignment.

  1. Scroll to the Common module settings section.

  2. Set Group mode to Separate groups. This will add a filter to the grading table that allows switching between groups when grading.

  3. Scroll to the bottom and click Save.
