MyPortfolio (Mahara) Assignment in Moodle

MyPortfolio (Mahara) Assignment in Moodle

A MyPortfolio Moodle Assignment is an integration between Moodle and Mahara that enables tutors to create assessments where students submit pages or collections from their MyPortfolio accounts.

When a portfolio is submitted in this way, a locked copy is created that the student cannot edit. This ensures that any changes made after the deadline are not reflected in the Moodle Assignment submission, while the student still retains access to the original “live” version of their portfolio.

Creating a MyPortfolio Assignment in Moodle

  1. Log in to Moodle and turn on Edit mode

  2. Click Add an activity or resource and select the Assignment activity.

  3. Under Submission types in the Assignment setting, select MyPortfolio Mahara.

  1. Configure other assignment settings as needed. For further guidance, see Creating a Moodle assignment.

  2. Save the assignment.

Important: Re-submitting MyPortfolio pages or collections after making changes

When a portfolio is submitted in this way, a locked copy is created that the student cannot edit. If the student needs to make changes, they must re-submit the portfolio, just as they would with any other Moodle Assignment.

Marking a MyPortfolio Assignment in Moodle

The marking process is the same for MyPortfolio Assignments as it is for other Moodle Assignments.

  1. Log in to Moodle.

  2. Navigate to the MyPortfolio assignment.

  3. Click on the Submissions tab.

  4. Click on the link to the portfolio from the MyPortfolio Mahara column.

  5. You will be redirected to MyPortfolio (it may ask you to log in first).

  6. Return to Moodle and click the Grade button to provide marks and feedback.

Sharing portfolios directly through MyPortfolio

If you are using MyPortfolio throughout the academic year and need to regularly engage with students’ portfolios, you may wish to ask students to share their work with you directly through MyPortfolio. In this way you will always be able to access the latest version of their work. Because the Moodle MyPortfolio integration creates a copy of a page or collection, you will not be able to see any updates unless students re-submit their work via Moodle every time they add something or make any changes.

By default, portfolios created by students are private and can only be viewed once they have been shared with you. Students can set the access permissions on the Edit access page. It is accessible via Main menuShare Shared by me or directly from the Edit screen of a page.

There are many in which they share their work:

  • Allow access to named individuals or groups.

  • Generate a Secret URL (weblink) that can be emailed.

  • Open the page/collection to all staff and students.

  • Make the page public on the web (please be aware of copyright and accessibility considerations).

Further guidance for students on sharing their portfolios can be found here: Assessment (students): sharing your work.

If you need to mark the portfolio at the end of the year, please set-up a MyPortfolio Assigment in Moodle at the end of the course, once students have completed their work.

Meeting the UCL Connected Learning baseline

The UCL Connected Learning Baselinesuggests the following for assessment:

4.1 Provide an assessment outline  with a clear description of the module assessment, including schedule, criteria and submission details. To avoid duplication, this might include a link to a module webpage.
