M09e6 - Releasing grades and feedback

Always notify students when their grades and feedback are released.

Moodle Assignment

There are three different ways to release marks to students in a Moodle Assignment:

  1. Use Marking Workflow and change the marking state to Released

  2. For anonymised submissions, go to Actions > Reveal student identities

  3. Manually hide or unhide the item in the Gradebook

Digital Education strongly recommends using Marking Workflow.

Marking Workflow:

  • Provides greater control and transparency in the marking process

  • Allows partial release of marks

  • Enables marks to be released while student identities remain hidden

Note: Marking Workflow must be enabled in the assignment settings. For guidance, see: https://ucldata.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MoodleResourceCentre/pages/1092976643

How to Release Marks Using Marking Workflow

  1. Open the Assignment.

  2. Click the Submissions tab.

  3. Select the students whose marks you want to release by ticking the box next to their names.

    • To select all students, tick the box at the top of the Select column.

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and open the drop-down menu.

  5. Click More, then select Change marking state.

  6. Change the marking state to Released.

  7. Click Save changes.

Turnitin Assignment

You set a Post Date in the Turnitin assignment settings when creating the assignment.  Marks and feedback are automatically released at Post Date (this is also when anonymised student identities will be revealed).

Quiz

You can either specify when the grades and feedback should be released, or release them when you're ready.

For summative assessments, it’s advisable to leave all ‘Review options’ settings switched off until you are ready to release grades and feedback to students.

To release grades and feedback:

  1. Open the quiz.

  2. Go to the quiz Settings.

  3. Scroll down until you reach the 'Review options' section.

  4. Select Marks under the ‘After the quiz’ is closed column. You may first need to select The attempt and Maximum marks.

  5. Select any additional items in the ‘After the quiz is closed’ column that you would like students to see.

  6. Click Save and return to course.

Why can't students see the grades and feedback I released?

Did you Save your changes?

While marking work, you will be prompted to Save your changes. Ensure you do this before closing your browser.

If using Marking workflow in a Moodle assignment - is the status set to ‘Released’?

If you have selected Use marking workflow in the Moodle Assignment settings, ensure the status of the workflow is set to Released.

Was Anonymous/Blind marking enabled?

Grades will not feed back to the Moodle gradebook and will not be visible to students unless student names have been revealed.

Once you reveal names you cannot revert to blind marking again. To reveal names:

  1. Navigate to the relevant assignment and click on the submissions tab.

  2. Using the drop down menu at the top of the screen select Reveal student identities. A prompt will then appear asking you to confirm that you would like to reveal the names.

  3. This action cannot be undone. Click continue if you wish to proceed.

Feedback Tracker

The Feedback tracker is a report that allows students to more easily access feedback and see feedback turnaround times. It allows staff to signpost assessments and indicate when feedback is going to be returned, in what format, and whether the assessment is summative or formative.

The Feedback tracker also allows staff to see a summary of marking progress for their assessments.
