M30b - Duplicating a read-only Moodle course

The Course rollover tool is generally used to rollover a 2025/26 Moodle course to the next year (2026/27).

If you have courses that require rolling over but haven't run in 2025/26, you will need to manually adjust the settings to ensure you rollover successfully to 2026/27 courses.

Staff can temporarily make a read-only course editable

Moodle course become read only at the end of the academic year.  You can make a read only course editable by clicking the Enable editing button in the Lifecycle block on the right of the course. A confirmation pop-up message will appear for you to proceed.  By default, the course will automatically revert to Read-Only mode the next day, however you can extend the editable duration.  We we strongly recommend setting a new read-only date, to avoid potential data loss within Moodle courses. If you need to extend the editable duration indefinitely, the course should either be placed in a Timeless category, or show no end date set in the course Settings.

How to rollover a previous year's course when it is read-only.

  1. Access the course you want to roll over.

  2. Go to the Lifecycle block and select Enable Editing

  3. Follow the instructions in the main rollover guide.
