Moodle Assignment Rubrics
Use a rubric in Moodle Assignment when you want to assess work against defined criteria and levels of achievement. Markers select the relevant cell for each criterion, and the rubric automatically calculates the final grade.
If you want to allocate numerical marks across different assessment criteria, you can use a marking guide instead: Moodle Assignment Marking Guides
When using a Moodle assignment which has Turnitin enabled please use the Moodle Rubric. Do not use a Turnitin Rubric within a Moodle assignment.
Creating a Rubric
Go to the Moodle Assignment and click Advanced Grading.
Select Rubric from the drop-down menu.
You can also change the grading method from the Moodle Assignment settings. Go to the Grade section and select a grading method. You will be prompted to create a rubric after you Save and display.
Click Define new grading form from scratch, unless you want to use an existing template.
Give the Rubric a Name.
Click to edit a criterion and Click to edit level lets you type a description and assign points to each level.
Tip: Numeric points are required, but if you want to use your rubric to give feedback without a numeric grade it is possible to hide these from students, and hide the final calculated grade from students.
To add new levels click the +Add level button.
To add further criterion click the +Add criterion button and repeat the above process to edit the criterion name and level descriptions.
A duplicate button allows you to quickly make a copy of a row.
Check the rubric options and adjust if necessary.
When students click on an assignment which has a rubric attached to it, they will see the rubric as part of the information about their assignment. If you do not want students to see the rubric, untick Allow users to preview rubric in the rubric options.
Once complete, click Save rubric and make it ready.
Click the Settings menu at the top of the assignment page.
Scroll down to the Grade heading and ensure the maximum grade is still set to 100. (It may have changed to match the maximum score in the rubric, which may not be 100).
Click Save and display.
Using a Rubric for Marking
Go to the Moodle Assignment and click the Grade button.
The rubric you have set up will display as a table in the grading area.
Above the rubric, there is a small ‘expand’ icon. Clicking on this will expand the rubric into a pop-up window in the centre of the screen.
For each criterion, select a level by clicking in its cell.
If enabled, you can provide written feedback for each criterion.
Underneath the rubric you can add general Feedback comments, and/or upload a Feedback file.
The grade will be calculated when you click Save changes.
Downloading a Rubric report
You can export the feedback for each criterion as an Excel spreadsheet. The file will include each student’s first name, last name, and ID number, along with their corresponding feedback and scores.
Go to your Moodle assignment with a rubric attached.
From the menu along the top, click Rubric breakdown report.
Select either Excel download or CSV download.
Save in an appropriate location.
Publishing a Rubric as a Site-wide Template
By default, a rubric or marking guide can only be reused by the person who created it. Publishing it as a site-wide template allows other UCL staff to select and reuse it in their own Moodle Assignment or Coursework activities.
Please note: Once published, your rubric will be available to all UCL staff.
To request that your rubric is published as a site-wide template, please complete this form: MyServices - Moodle Staff Query Form.
