M79 - Granting Manual Extensions (RAA/EC/DAP)
You may wish to add manual extensions for the reasons pertaining to DAP, EC and RAA.
You do not need to add manual extensions if these have been automated.
For information on automated extensions see the guide Automated extensions on Moodle
Confused about extensions? See Which extension when guide!
DAP - Delayed Assessment Permit
Up to three times per year students can submit a Delayed Assessment Permit (DAP) if they wish to delay their submission beyond the activity deadline. A Delayed Assessment Permit (DAP) must only be used when the circumstance is NOT governed by EC or RAA regulations.
EC - Extenuating Circumstances
For emergencies that are sudden, unexpected and beyond the students control. Students should submit an Extenuating Circumstances claim.
RAA - Reasonable Academic Adjustment
Long-term, chronic conditions and disabilities are accommodated through Reasonable Academic Adjustments.
(Previously known as SORA - Summary of Reasonable Adjustments).
How to add a manual extension for a Moodle Quiz
To grant an extension on a Moodle Quiz, you can add a User Override (or select Group Override if the extension is to be applied to multiple students. If using a Group Override, please ensure only students with an RAA are included in the associated group).
Go to the quiz on the Moodle page
Click the More then Overrides
Click Add user override (or select ‘Group overrides’ from the drop-down menu, and select 'Add Group Override)
Search for and select a student name (or select the group)
If you require password protection you can add a password to the quiz
Set the time to Open the Quiz if this needs to differ from the time shown
Set the time to Close the quiz - This would usually extend beyond the Due Date of the main quiz settings.
Set a Time limit if required
Set the number of attempts allowed - The default is ‘unlimited’. You may wish to set this to '1'.
Click Save
Add a Group Override to manually enable RAA extensions
Select the RAA group name from the list of groups
If you do not have a dedicated RAA group you will need to create a new group (by clickingParticipants link - Groups - Create Group). Information on creating groups is available on the
M13 - Groups and groupings guidance
Add a User Override for individual user extensions not associated with RAA
How to add a manual extension for a Moodle Assignment
To grant an extension on a Moodle assignment, you should add a User Override (or select Group Override if the extension is to be applied to multiple students, such as those with a RAA extension.
You should create a new group to ensure only students with a RAA are included in the associated RAA related group).
Go to the assignment on the Moodle page
Click the More link then Overrides
Click Add user override (or for RAA recipients select ‘Group overrides’ from the drop-down menu, and select 'Add Group Override)
Search for and select a student name (or select the group)
If required amend the ‘Allow Submissions from’ date
Enter the required Due Date - This override date would usually extend beyond the Due Date of the main assignment settings.
If required amend the ‘Cut Off date’.
If required set a Time limit for submissions
Note: Granting ‘Overrides’ will ensure students with an override do not receive assignment overdue notifications, once the original assignment due date has passed. In contrast granting ‘Extensions’ will NOT prevent the students from receiving assignment overdue notifications).
How to add a manual extension for a Turnitin assignment
We recommend creating a separate Turnitin assignment for RAA, EC or DAP approved students.
Turnitin assignments do not provide an override facility. Creating a new Turnitin assignment activity then manually adding the instruction is recommended, instead of duplicating an existing Turnitin assignment.
During the initial set up of a Turnitin assignment, you can allow submissions after the due date, however, if a student has already made a submission prior to the deadline and needs to submit late, or has an agreed extension, their previously submitted paper would need to be removed from the submission area before they would be able to submit again once the deadline has passed. Once the Due Date is reached, all submitted work is locked, and re-submissions are not allowed. We therefore recommend creating a separate Turnitin assignment for RAA, EC or DAP approved students.
Further information
For DAP, EC or RAA guidelines please see the relevant sections of the Academic Manual.
DAP - Delayed Assessment Permit (DAP) - Students can request to delay submission up to three times per academic year with no urgent or health related reason.
EC - Extenuating Circumstances - For emergencies that are sudden, unexpected and beyond the students control students should submit an Extenuating Circumstances claim.
RAA - Reasonable Academic Adjustments - To support students with physical, mobility, sensory, neurological or mental health related conditions and disabilities.
Automated extensions for Moodle assignment and quiz
Automated extensions are now available for Moodle assignment and quiz. If you wish to use automated extensions on a Moodle course, we recommend deleting any manual overrides you have created already since Portico should be the source of truth and is continually updated anyway.
