Moodle Assignment Allowed Attempts Setting
In Moodle assignment ‘Attempts’ are submissions that receive a unique grade or feedback instance. When enabling multiple allowed Attempts, students can submit a new attempt after having received the grade and feedback of their initial attempt. Each Attempt requires a fresh grade and feedback instance. (Allowed attempts is set to 1 by default, whereby students will receive one grade for their submission).
For summative Moodle assignments we would expect 'Allowed attempts' to remain set as the default of 1 otherwise each unique attempt will require a separate grade/feedback instance
The allowed attempts Setting in Moodle Assignment determines whether a student can submit additional attempts after an initial attempt has receive a grade or feedback.
When allowed attempts is set to more than 1, Moodle provides the following options to open further attempts:
Automatic – A new attempt opportunity is automatically reopened once the teacher has graded or provided feedback.
Manually – Teachers must manually allow another attempt, if needed.
Automatically until pass – Students make multiple attempts, which each receive a grade, until they achieve the required passing grade.

Key Reminders
Students can edit and re-upload their submission multiple times if the submission has not been manually locked or if no Cut-Off date has been set. This is independent of the number of Allowed Attempts.
Setting a submit button can prevent students from changing their submissions, but this is not generally encouraged (see M09a).
Even when ‘Use Marking Workflow’ is enabled when a second Attempt is granted (manually or automatically) the grades and feedback from the first attempt will be released to the student.
