Offline Marking, Downloading Marks and Feedback
Overview
Offline marking allows Markers and Reviewers with permission to decide the final grade to download student submissions, a grade sheet, and rubrics (markers only) from WISEflow so that users can work outside of the platform. You can also reimport annotated files, grades, a single feedback comment per student and a completed rubric.
Note: Standard rubrics can be exported and imported back into WISEflow without issue. In custom rubrics, the only supported question types for offline marking are:
Multiple choice questions
Range scoring questions
If you are using a custom rubric that contains other question types, this will need to be completed in WISEflow. Further information can be found in the following guidance:
Offline marking is currently not compatible with the following:
Advanced item-based marking or rubric-based marking workflows.
Scoring in FLOWmulti assessments (i.e. you cannot use offline marking to score individual questions - although you could work around this with a suitably formatted custom rubric).
Custom rubrics which use question types other than multiple choice or range scoring.
The ‘Group Submission with Individual Grade’ setting used in group projects.
Exporting a package for offline marking
Access the flow as a Marker and click the Offline marking button in the upper right corner of the page:
Alternatively as a Reviewer with permission to decide the final grade, click the Offline marking button which appears above the table of participants (students):On the screen that follows, you will be prompted to build a package for export (i.e. choose what you want to download). You can choose to download the following package content:
Submissions (structured in separate folders or all in one folder)
Any marking guidance that has been attached to the flow
Assignment(s) attached to the flow
A grade sheet
A rubric, if this has been allocated to you (markers only)
Note: FLOWmulti submissions can only be downloaded as separate folders. Additionally, each item (page or section) in the submission is contained in its own folder:
Clicking on Filter submissions will allow you to select a specific subset of student submissions or grade sheet data to download. This could be used to exclude non-submit students, or submissions that have already been graded, for example:
Finally, select the Export tab and then click the Generate package button:
A ZIP file containing the requested information can be downloaded after a few minutes. Note that larger packages will take longer to generate. Alternatively, if you have only selected a grade sheet for export, a Download grade sheet button will be available:
Importing files marked offline
Note: In order to import feedback files, you will need to export student submissions from WISEflow with the following settings:
Structure of the submissions: As separate folders
Include coversheets: As a separate file
Outside of WISEflow: prepare the folder structure. Feedback files must be stored in the extracted offline package you downloaded from WISEflow, inside the appropriate candidate subfolder.
The student submission can be annotated in your PDF editor of choice and saved/ overwritten. Alternatively, you can add a separate file of any type to the folder. WISEflow will detect the changes during the import process.Access the flow as a Marker and click the Offline marking button in the upper right corner of the page:
On the screen that follows, click the Import package tab, and select the option to Import files marked in offline package:
Upload the entire extracted offline package. Data that can be imported will be displayed in the table of participants below. If you have annotated and overwritten a submitted PDF, this will be listed under Marked revisions. Additional files will be displayed under Submission feedback.
Click Import feedback files. On the prompt window that appears, tick the checkbox and click Upload feedback to start the import process. Do not close the tab while the import process is running.
Once complete, you will see confirmation on screen of the files that were uploaded. Click Close to finish.
How imported feedback files look in WISEFlow
For Staff (Markers and Reviewers):
Marked revisions of the student submission can be found inside the marking tool under the Submission panel.
Any other files that were uploaded appear in the same way that submission feedback does, under the Feedback panel.
For Students (Participants):
When students access the feedback summary page, marked revisions of their submission can be found in the Submission section and selected via the dropdown menu.
Any other files attached as feedback can be found under the Submission feedback panel, where the file label can be clicked on to preview or download the attachment.
Importing a grade sheet
Important: You can edit cells in the following columns of the grade sheet:
Submission comment
Submission comment sharing
Grade finalised
Grade
Rubric state (if compatible and included in grade sheet)
Rubric sharing (if compatible and included in grade sheet)
Rubric fields (if compatible and included in grade sheet)
Creating extra columns, deleting existing columns or editing cells in columns not mentioned above may prevent successful import. It may be necessary to change the grade column type to 'text' if the grades are decimal based or with non-standard number formats.
Access the flow as a Marker and click the Offline marking button in the upper right corner of the page:
Alternatively as a Reviewer with permission to decide the final grade, click the Offline marking button which appears above the table of participants (students):
On the screen that follows, click the Import package tab, and then the option to Import content from grade sheet:
Upload the grade sheet. Data that can be imported will be displayed in the table of participants below:
Click the Import All button at the bottom of the table. If using a compatible rubric, you can optionally tick the box to approve any rubrics that have been filled out on the grade sheet. Click Import to continue.
You will receive confirmation on the screen once the import process is complete. Click Finalise to finish.
Marking Specific Questions Offline
Scores for individual questions cannot be recorded on a standard grade sheet downloaded from WISEflow, only the overall score for the exam paper. If you wish to mark specific questions offline, here are some suggestions which may make this easier:
FLOWmulti only: use the question statistics feature to download participant response or score data. See View and Download Response / Scoring Data for Entire Flow (for all your allocated participants) for more information.
All flow types: consider building an offline compatible standard or custom rubric. If using a custom rubric: providing one range scoring question for each question that will be scored in the assessment will allow the individual marks to be recorded via the grade sheet.
Assessments with optional questions could be accommodated by incorporating an unscored multiple-choice question into a custom rubric, allowing markers to indicate which question the student answered. See Creating a rubric for more information.
Downloading and Exporting Feedback
