Using Item-Based Marking (FLOWmulti only)
Note: Item-based marking is an advanced marking workflow. If you are new to using WISEflow, you may also find the following guidance helpful:
Overview
Item-based marking allows markers to be allocated to a specific part of the assessment, rather than individual students. This allows them to see only the relevant sections of the exam for marking. All markers' scores, along with any automatic scoring, can then be collated and added together to produce final grades for student submissions at Manager level.
This makes the marking process significantly easier to complete in WISEflow in scenarios where:
Markers with different specialisms need to assess different parts of the submission, and
All questions in the exam must be answered (i.e. there are no optional/ “X out of Y” questions)
This workflow is not compatible with the use of rubrics.
Scoring Questions
In the Marking role, access the appropriate flow (assessment) via your Flow overview:
Open the marking tool and click on the Scoring button. This will open the Scoring panel on the right hand side of the page:
Questions that you have not given a score to are highlighted in yellow. Use the score input field(s) to enter a score. The current item score and the overall score for the parts of the exam you have been allocated will update:
Once you have scored all the questions for this item (section of the exam), you can click the Lock item button to finish (Alternatively, if you have multiple items to mark you can lock them all later, as described in step 6):
If you have been assigned to mark multiple parts of the exam, you can click Next item to continue navigating and marking the current student’s submission. Alternatively, you can use the Navigation panel to move onto scoring the same question for a different student:
Tip: you can also use the keyboard shortcuts CTRL+↑ or CTRL+↓ to navigate to another student, and CTRL+← or CTRL+→ to navigate to another item in the exam paper. The same shortcuts will work on a Mac, using the CMD key instead of CTRL.
If you did not lock individual items as you scored them, you can lock all of the items for a student by clicking the Item overview button or the Submission button. In either case, you will be shown the Item overview/ submission panel. Click the Lock all button to lock all items for the student, which will allow you to submit your total scores:
Once you have finished entering scores for all the items you were allocated, you will need to submit them. You can submit a score for an individual student by clicking the Submit score button in the Grade panel:
Alternatively, you can submit all of your scores in bulk by exiting the marking tool and opening the Marking overview. On this screen, click Submit all:Successfully submitted scores are shown with a closed padlock in the upper right of the marking tool:
Submitted scores can also be seen underneath the Padlock column in the marking overview:
Changing a Score
Important: Remember to lock and re-submit your scores after you have changed them, otherwise an overall grade for the student(s) cannot be calculated!
Before scores are submitted
If you have locked an item but haven’t submitted your scores yet, click the Unlock item button in the Scoring panel:
Alternatively, to unlock all items for a student you can click the Unlock all button which is accessed via the Item overview/ Submission panel:
After scores are submitted
You will need to ask a user with Manager access to the flow (i.e. a programme administrator) to unlock the relevant item(s) in the exam for you.
