Adding and allocating rubrics
Overview
A rubric is a marking framework that can be used to deliver consistent feedback to students and provide a grade. Rubrics in WISEflow are created in the Authoring role, and should be made by an academic user.
In WISEflow, a rubric must be published before it can be attached to a flow (assessment). Published rubrics will have a reference code comprised of eight digits (letters and numbers) separated by a hyphen. It is possible to attach multiple rubrics to a flow.
Ideally any rubrics should be attached to a flow before the start of the marking period, but it is still possible to attach a rubric after this date.
Important: Changes to rubrics once the marking period is underway, including staff allocations, should be approached with caution as this may result in a loss of marking data. If you need to make any changes after the marking period has commenced, consult your Faculty Learning Technology Lead (FLTL) or raise a ticket via MyServices first.
Attaching a Rubric
Note: It is not possible to attach a rubric to a flow if:
A grade has been submitted or finalised (it will need to be unlocked first, see Unlocking Grades for more information.)
An existing rubric has already been allocated to all Markers on the flow
A grade scaler has been set (this will need to be deleted first)
Access the flow as a Manager and click the Manage rubrics button under the Marking and review panel.
If the reference code for a published rubric has been provided to you, copy and paste it into the input field and click the green Attach button. Alternatively, if the rubric has been shared with you in WISEflow you can click Attach by search.
The attached rubric will be visible in the Rubrics area, along with information about the minimum and maximum score of the rubric and its Author. Once attached, the rubric must be allocated to a Marker to allow them to use it - see Allocating a Rubric. Steps 1-3 can be repeated to add multiple rubrics to the flow.
Optional: add a grade scaler to the rubric, which will help markers convert the rubric score into a grade (this feature is not available if multiple rubrics have been attached). In the Settings area, click the wrench button to edit the grade scaler.
If the Author has already created a suitable grade scaler, you can click Set author grade scaler, otherwise you can set one. If using letter grades or a pass/ fail format, you can define the thresholds for each grade boundary on the scale, otherwise click Add to finish.
Allocating a Rubric
Note: While it is possible to add multiple rubrics to a flow, you can only allocate one rubric to a marker.
Allocate a Rubric to all Markers
If all markers will be using the same rubric, this is the quickest and easiest way to allocate it:
Access the flow as a Manager and click the Manage rubrics button under the Marking and review panel.
In the Rubrics area, click the Pencil button to edit a rubric.
If the marking period has already started, you will need to acknowledge a warning message about the consequences of making changes to rubric allocations. Tick the box for the Allocated to all setting and click Save to finish.
A flag symbol on the attached rubric will confirm that it is allocated to all markers, and information about the allocated rubric will also be visible in the Rubric column of the Assessors table below.
Allocate a Rubric to specific Markers
This method should be used if you are managing a flow where multiple rubrics are in use:
Access the flow as a Manager and click the Manage rubrics button under the Marking and review panel.
Scroll down to the Assessors table, which displays a table of all Markers that have been added to the flow. In the Rubric column of the table, click the Pencil button to access options to allocate a rubric to a specific marker.
If the marking period has already started, you will need to acknowledge a warning message about the consequences of making changes to rubric allocations. Select the appropriate rubric from the dropdown menu and click Save to finish.
Alternatively, you can click Open rubric allocation matrix above the Assessors table to allocate rubrics to specific Markers via a grid.
If the marking period has already started, you will need to acknowledge a warning message about the consequences of making changes to rubric allocations. Select the appropriate cell in the grid to allocate a rubric to a Marker. Repeat as needed and click Save to finish.
Removing a Rubric
WARNING: Removing a rubric when marking is already underway will result in the loss of any data that Markers have entered into the rubric. This information cannot be recovered.
If a rubric needs to be changed or replaced after marking has started, tell the marking team to pause immediately and contact your FLTL for assistance.
Access the flow as a Manager and click the Manage rubrics button under the Marking and review panel.
In the Rubrics area, click the bin button on an attached rubric to access the option to delete it.
If the marking period has already started, you will need to acknowledge a warning message about the consequences of deletion. Click Delete to remove the rubric.
