Group Projects

Overall Group Settings

Important: Setting up group projects is time sensitive. You should do this before the participation start date is reached. Changing the overall group settings once students have started submitting work will likely result in the loss of student submissions!

A screenshot of a warning message displayed in WISEflow. The message reads 'This will reset all groups and submissions and delete material that may have been uploaded'

Group work is supported on the following flow types:

  • FLOWassign

  • FLOWhandin

  • FLOWattend

There are three types of overall group settings that can be enabled in WISEflow:

  1. Groups Submission: One group member can submit on behalf of the entire group (unless using FLOWattend). The entire group receives the same grade and feedback.

  2. Individual Submissions: Each group member must upload and submit something (unless using FLOWattend). Each group member receives their own grade and feedback.

  3. Group with Shared Submission and Individual Grading: One group member can submit on behalf of the entire group (unless using FLOWattend). Each group member receives their own grade. Feedback is shared with the entire group.

Group settings can be defined on the main flow page under the Group type dropdown menu in the Details panel.

Once a group type has been defined, the Manage groups button in the Participants list becomes active. The Groups column also appears in the table of participant data, and in several other places (e.g. the marker allocation matrix).

Creating Groups

Group Formation and Size Settings

  1. Access the flow as a Manager. Scroll down to the Participants list and click Manage groups.

  2. On the Manage groups page, click Group settings.

  3. You can optionally set an expected minimum and maximum group size and determine whether students are allowed to form their own groups, either during or in advance of the flow’s submission period. Click Confirm.

  4. Click the Save button in the upper right corner to finish before navigating away from this page or continuing onto group creation.

Note: By default, students are allowed to form groups once the participation start date and time is reached. Group size settings communicate the expectation to students, but it is still possible for them to form groups that are smaller or larger than the minimum/ maximum.

Creating pre-defined groups

Note: You must assign students to any groups you have created. Students cannot search for groups created by a Manager and enrol themselves.

Create a single group

  1. On the Manage groups page, click the blue Add group button.

  2. The newly created group will appear in the Groups area below. You can optionally click the pencil button on any group to edit its individual settings, including changing the group number, adding a group name (note: this will be visible to students), and determining whether students are allowed to edit the group membership.

Repeat these steps as needed and click Save to finish.

Once done, you will need to assign the students to the groups. See Assigning Students to a Group (Group Membership) for more information.

Create multiple groups

  1. On the Manage groups page, click the blue burger button and select the option to Add multiple groups.

  2. You can choose to Add empty groups and specify the number of groups to create or alternatively select Add groups and allocate all participants to the groups, which allows you to define the group size and then automatically creates the required number of groups and randomly allocates students. Click Add groups to proceed with your selection.

  3. The newly created groups will appear in the Groups area below. You can optionally click the pencil button on any group to edit its individual settings, including changing the group number, adding a group name (note: this will be visible to students), and determining whether students are allowed to edit the group membership.

  4. Click Save to finish.

You will now need to assign the students to the groups. See Assigning Students to a Group (Group Membership) for more information.

Create groups while assigning students

  1. On the Manage groups page, use the checkboxes to select the appropriate students in the list of Participants not in a group.

  2. Use the plus button that has appeared at the bottom of the page to form a group for the selected students.

  3. You can optionally give the group a name before clicking Create. The newly created group containing the selected students will now be visible in the Groups area.

  4. Repeat as needed and click Save to finish.

Letting students set up groups

If you are allowing students to form their own groups in WISEflow, it is recommended that you communicate this to them beforehand and provide a link to our student wiki guidance on Group Projects.

The group settings on the flow must allow students to create their own groups, either at flow activation or at participation start. See Group Formation and Size Settings for more information.

When students access a flow that has been set up for group projects, there will be an onscreen notification advising that they need to be in a group before they are allowed to submit.

When a student forms a new group, they can optionally give the group a name and then select other students to invite. Invited students must accept their invitation in order to be assigned to the group. You can view any student created groups in the Manage groups page as normal, including any pending invitations. You can also have full editing access to any student created groups.

Assigning Students to a Group (Group Membership)

Important: Setting up group projects is time sensitive. Group membership cannot be amended once the global submission deadline has passed. It is recommended that you double check whether all students have been assigned to a group 24 hours before the submission deadline is reached.

Assigning Random Group Members

This is the fastest way to assign students to existing groups.

  1. On the Manage groups page, click the Allocate equally button.

    image-20251126-110130.png

  2. A prompt will appear onscreen. Tick the checkbox and click Confirm, WISEflow will then randomly assign students to groups while keeping the group size as equal as possible.

  3. Click Save to finish.

Assigning Specific Group Members

Important: Whichever method you use to assign group members, always remember to click the Save button in the upper right corner to finish!

image-20251127-085645.png

Method 1

You can assign specific students to groups by using the grey tabs next to their details to drag and drop them into your chosen group.

Method 2

If you have a spreadsheet containing student email addresses or a text file with this information (separated by commas), you can copy and paste the data into any group’s input field to rapidly assign multiple students.

Method 3

Use the checkboxes next to any students' details to select them.

Click the blue move to group button that appears at the bottom of the page to move the selected students into an existing group and click Move to finish.

What happens if I change group membership after a submission is made?

Important: Do not remove students and leave them ungrouped once submission is underway, otherwise they cannot be assessed properly during the marking period.

If group membership needs to change, move them into another group using one of the methods described in the previous section.

Groups Submission/ Group with Shared Submission and Individual Grading

  • Users that are added to the group will be associated with the submission that has been made.

  • Users that are moved to a different group will no longer have access to their previous group’s submission in WISEflow, even if they are the one that originally uploaded and submitted it.

Individual Submissions

  • Users that are moved to a different group will keep the submission that they have made.
