The LSM 900 Upright is a confocal microscope with the following features: A fixed-stage Axio Examiner stand with a focusing nosepiece and adjustable stage height for accommodating larger specimens; a motorized stage; a choice of standard objective lenses and a long working distance dipping lens for imaging cleared specimens; four visible lasers for imaging blue, green, red and far-red fluorophores; Two GaAsP detectors and an Airyscan 2 detector for super-resolution imaging.

Users must specify whether they need to use the standard sets of lenses (e.g. air or oil immersion lenses) or the specialised dipping lens for water or high refractive index cleared specimens. The latter has a larger thread size, so the nosepiece of the microscope must be swapped to accommodate the specialist lens and then swapped back afterwards. This must be done by facility staff, so anybody who needs to use the specialist lenses must book sufficient time in working hours (0900-1700) for a staff member to install the nosepiece prior to use and also to remove it afterwards. I estimate exchanging the nosepiece will take about 30 minutes.

The calendar is configured so that it is possible to see which lens a user has booked. Facility staff now also receive emails whenever anyone books the machine.
