What is it?

The Online users  block lets you and your students see who else is online.  Clicking a user name takes you to their profile, where you can send a Moodle message and view further information about that user.

Why use it?

This block can help students and staff see who is currently logged in to Moodle, so they can have a real-time chat with them using the Moodle chat, an external tool, or send them a Moodle message.

Who can use it?

Tutors and course administrators can add an activities block to a Moodle course.

Students can use the block to see who is online and click their name to see their profile.

Meeting the Baseline

The UCL E-Learning Baseline suggests the following for Communication:

  •  3.4 Advise staff and students to upload profile pictures to help personalise the online environment and allow online discussions between collaborators to be more easily followed.
These will appear alongside the user's name in the online users block, as well as forum discussion posts and other contributions made by that user in other areas of Moodle.

How do I set one up?

See: M05 - Organise blocks.
