Moodle Quick Start Guide for Students

How to log in to Moodle

Access Moodle by navigating to the Moodle Homepage http://moodle.ucl.ac.uk on your web browser, from a PC, Laptop or Mobile device. Select the “UCL login” link to sign in with your UCL username and password. These are the same credentials you use for other central UCL services such as the Library or UCL email.

Please note: We do not provide support for the Moodle Mobile App. All functions should be available on a web browser from your mobile phone. For exam assessments (such as an assignment or a quiz) we strongly recommend you log on to Moodle via a web browser at http://moodle.ucl.ac.uk

Follow this guidance if you have Forgotten your user ID or password

Navigation & module access on Moodle

Upon logging in, you will land on the Dashboard.

The 'Pick up where you left off' feature allows you to conveniently resume your learning from the point you last accessed.

The Timeline section, on the right, offers a visual representation of your upcoming activities and their deadlines, helping you manage tasks efficiently.

The Feedback feature, on the left, centralises all your assignments feedback, streamlining the process of accessing and reviewing feedback.

The My Courses tab. in the top banner, displays links to your modules. If you can't find a particular module, use the Search area above the list of courses to search by Module code or name. If you have selected a Module on Portico but do not have access to the Moodle course, speak to your Course / Programme Administrator to ensure the content is available and your selection approved.

By clicking a link to a module, you will be directed to the Module page containing materials and activities.

Use the Course Index, on the left of the page, for a comprehensive overview of your course content and structure. From there you can expand or collapse all sections, and jump to a specific section or activity with one click.

Updating your profile

Adding a picture to your Moodle profile helps your fellow students and tutors recognise you, which can be particularly useful during your initial weeks. To edit your profile, hover over your name at the top right of the page and click Edit Profile.

To edit your profile:

  1. Hover over your initials (top right of page) to activate a menu.

  2. Click Profile.

  3. Click Edit profile.

  4. Check or select your Timezone.

  5. Upload your picture to the User picture section.
User picture: do include a distinctive User picture. A picture of your face will help staff and students get to know your name. Your image will be cropped & resized automatically to 100 by 100 pixels.

Name: this is pulled from your Portico Record. You can set a preferred name from your My Portico page. If your name is incorrect or needs to be updated, please follow the guidance from the student records team.

Timezone: This field is used to convert time-related messages on the system (such as assignment deadlines) from the local timezone (the time in London) to the correct time in whichever zone you have selected. Check this is set to your local timezone.

  6. To save, scroll down and click Update profile.

Managing Moodle Emails

If you are receiving too many emails from Moodle, you can adjust your settings to receive a daily digest (every afternoon) of all emails.

Please note, by setting a daily email digest you may miss 'last minute' messages from your course teams, such as a change in venue.

To do this:

  1. Click on your initials or profile picture, at the top of any Moodle page.

  2. Select Preferences

  3. Click on Forum preferences.

  4. Change the Email Digest Type to Complete (daily email with full posts).

  5. Click Save changes.

Assistance and Support

  • In case you're uncertain about where to find something or how to use a specific feature, reach out to your teaching department in the first instance. Your Tutor or the Course / Programme Administrator are most familiar with their content, and can advise what should or should not be available.

  • Please refer to the central guidance for User ID, password or Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) issues.

  • For technical queries on the Moodle platform which your teaching team cannot resolve, please complete a Moodle Student Query Form so that we can investigate.
