Introduction to Moodle

Moodle is the online learning platform used by UCL. It contains individual spaces for each of your modules, where you can access a variety of information, materials, and activities.

Almost all taught modules have a Moodle space.

How to log in to Moodle

Access Moodle by navigating to http://moodle.ucl.ac.uk on your  web browser. Select UCL login to log in with your UCL username and password, which are the same credentials you use for other UCL services such as the Library or UCL email.

Forgotten your user ID or password?

Navigation & module access on Moodle

Upon logging in, you will land on the Dashboard (My Home page).

The 'Pick up where you left off' feature allows you to conveniently resume your learning from the point you last accessed.

The Timeline section offers a visual representation of your upcoming activities and their deadlines, helping you manage tasks efficiently.

The Feedback feature centralises all your assignments feedback, streamlining the process of accessing and reviewing feedback.

The My Courses tab displays links to your modules. If you can't find a particular module, use the Search area above the list of courses to search by Module code or name.

By clicking a link to a module, you will be directed to the Module page containing materials and activities.

Use the Course Index, on the left of the page, for a comprehensive overview of your course’s content and structure, at a glance. From there you can expand or collapse all sections, and access a specific section or a specific activity, with one click.

Some modules may contain additional tools and content in blocks on the right-hand side of the page. You can access these by opening the block drawer.

Viewing your electronic feedback

All assessment feedback delivered through Moodle can be found in the Feedback block.

To access the Feedback tracker report:

  • Click Home in the navigation bar, to display your dashboard.

  • Click Feedback tracker.

Alternatively, you can find the Feedback tracker under your user profile menu.

Updating your profile

Adding a picture to your Moodle profile helps your fellow students and tutors recognise you, which can be particularly useful during your initial weeks. To edit your profile, hover over your name at the top right of the page and click Edit Profile.

To edit your profile:

  1. Hover over your initials (top right of page) to activate a menu.

  2. Click Profile.

  3. Click Edit profile.

  4. Check or select your Timezone.

  5. Upload your picture to the User picture section.

User picture: do include a distinctive User picture. A picture of your face will help staff and students get to know your name. Your image will be cropped & resized automatically to 100 by 100 pixels.

Name: if your name is incorrect, please contact the Service Desk (servicedesk@ucl.ac.uk) to change it for you.

Timezone: The Timezone field is used to convert time-related messages on the system (such as assignment deadlines) from the local timezone (the time in London) to the correct time in whichever zone you have selected. Check this is set to your local timezone.

  6. To save, scroll down and click Update profile.

Managing Moodle Emails

If you're receiving too many emails from Moodle, you can adjust your settings to receive a daily digest of all emails.

To do this:

  1. Click on your initials or profile picture, at the top of any Moodle page.

  2. Select Preferences

  3. Click on Forum preferences.

  4. Change the Email Digest Type to Complete (daily email with full posts).

  5. Click Save changes.

Note that if you are involved in a conversation on a Moodle forum and want to check more frequently, you can either change this setting, or log in and check the Forum.

Assistance and Support

  • In case you're uncertain about where to find something or how to use a specific feature, reach out to the relevant person in your department first. This could be your tutor or departmental administrator who should be able to guide you.
