Instruments and Information

The AFM is one of the foremost tools for imaging, measuring, and manipulating matter at the nanoscale. The information is gathered by "feeling" the surface with a sharp mechanical probe (cantilever). A laser shines onto the back of the cantilever and reflects onto an array of photodiodes to provide feedback to control the movement of piezoelectric elements. This facilitates tiny but accurate and precise movements to enable very precise scanning.
