Examples of time period responses entered as numeric answers

Example 1 Questionnaire: Lifestyle and Health of Mother (ALSPAC) question G1

Questionnaire layout:

Response to ‘how many hours sleep do you get’ is entered as two numeric answers, one for hours and one for minutes (see Numeric Answers for further guidance). Although the time period is sufficiently described (hours, minutes), the time period is not for a specific event (average sleep) and the time period is not continuous as a person may sleep more than once a day.

Example 2 Questionnaire: 12 Month Infancy Questionnaire (SWS) question 1.5

Questionnaire layout:

Response to ‘Total time actively sucking per day’ is entered as two numeric answers, one for hours and one for minutes (see Numeric Answers for further guidance) [Add link]. The time period is sufficiently described (hours, minutes). However, the time period is not for a specific event (average time actively sucking) and the time period is not continuous as it is for only the days in the past 4 weeks that the baby was breast fed.

Example 3 Questionnaire: Mother and Family (ALSPAC) question F7ai

Questionnaire layout:

Response to ‘For how many years of your life have you been/were you a vegetarian?’ is entered as a ‘How many’ numeric answer. The time period is for a specific event (being a vegetarian), however, the time period in the answer may not be continuous and the time period (‘years’) is not sufficiently described.

Example 4 Questionnaire: Mother and Home (ALSPAC) question E17

Questionnaire layout:

Response to ‘On average how many hours per day do you spend doing the following?’ is entered as a numeric answer (see Numeric Answers for further guidance). This question fails all three criteria for a duration answer. The time period is not for a specific event (average time spent), the period queried is not continuous, as each of the activities in the question may be done at several different points during a day, and the single time response of ‘hours’ does not sufficiently describe a discrete time period.
