Opening Zen Blue and focusing on your specimen

Opening Zen

  1. Double-click the Zen Blue icon on the desktop.
  2. Click the button that says Zen System. If you click Zen Image Processing the software won’t connect to the hardware because it will assume you only want to process data.

Putting your sample on the microscope

These instructions assume your sample is a slide and you are using the conventional objective lenses in the 4-position objective turret. You will need to know how to rotate the 4-position objective turret before proceeding.

  1. Rotate the 10x or another low power lens into position and rotate the turret knob into the halfway position.
  2. Put your specimen into the stage adapter. If you need more space, you can rotate the turret knob into the fully raised position or use the focus knobs to raise the nosepiece.
  3. Slowly rotate the turret knob into the ‘down’ position to prepare the objective lens for observation of the specimen. Watch the lens to make sure it doesn’t go through the sample. If it looks like the lens might go through, rotate the focus knob anti-clockwise to raise the nosepiece.
  4. Focus on the specimen using the coarse and fine focus knobs. The lenses should be parfocal so you should be able to focus on your sample using the 10x or another low power lens and then switch to a higher power lens without going too far out of focus.
  5. To change to a higher power lens, rotate the turret knob into the ‘up’ position and revolve the turret to move the desired objective lens into place. Slowly rotate the dial to the ‘down’ position, while watching as before to make sure the lens doesn’t go through the specimen.
  6. Make fine adjustments to the focus if necessary.
