M05b - Navigation block

What is it?

The navigation block displays an expanding tree menu which can include links to the Home page, Courses, Course structure/sections etc. What appears in the navigation block also depends on the role of the user, where they are in the Moodle site, and any settings that have been applied globally.

Why use it?

The navigation block can be used to provide navigation links to other areas of Moodle and/or to sections within a Moodle course.

Who can use it?

Everyone can use the block once they log in to Moodle.

Meeting the Baseline

The UCL Connected Learning Baseline suggests the following for Structure :

1.2 Minimise cognitive load - Avoid overloading the front page by placing content off the main page in Pages, Books, and Lessons, and by hiding unused items.

How do I set one up?

The navigation block is not set up by default on all Moodle courses, to set it up you'll need to:

Switch the toggle to edit mode on.
In the block drawer on the right-hand side, click + Add a block.
Scroll down and select 'Navigation'.
Next, click the cog icon and select 'Configure Navigation block'.
Then select the dropdown next to 'Generate navigation for the following' and select what you want the Navigation block to show eg. Everything .
Finally, click 'Save changes'.
