Using Rubric-Based Marking

Using Rubric-Based Marking

Note: Rubric-based marking is a specific, advanced marking workflow. It is not the same as just using a rubric to mark submissions. If it hasn’t been communicated to you by a flow Manager or the module/ programme lead that this workflow is in use, you might want to read guidance on Marking with a Rubric instead.

Overview

Rubric-based marking allows markers to use rubrics to submit scores for part of the assessment, rather than a grade for the entire assessment. All markers' scores can then be collated and either averaged or added together to produce final grades for student submissions at Manager level.

This makes the marking process significantly easier to complete in WISEflow in scenarios where:

  • Markers with different specialisms need to assess different parts of the submission, and

  • The assessment features X out of Y questions (e.g. “Answer THREE of the following FIVE questions”).

Scoring Submissions

Important: If you are using rubric-based marking in a FLOWmulti type flow, completely ignore the Scoring tab. All scores must be recorded via the rubric.

  1. In the Marking role, access the appropriate flow (assessment) via your Flow overview:

  2. Open the marking tool and click on the Rubrics button. The Rubrics panel will open on the right-hand side of the page:

  1. Fill out the rubric. The total score awarded can be seen at the bottom of the rubric. Once all parts of the rubric have been completed, click Approve rubric:

  2. The entered score can now be seen at the top of the page with an open padlock next to it, to indicate that it has not yet been submitted. The score for this individual student can be submitted by clicking Go to grading at the bottom of the rubric or by clicking the Grade button at the top of the page:

Alternatively, you can continue onto the next student via the Participants menu on the upper left-hand side of the page, or by using the Navigation panel on the lower left, and submit all your scores in bulk later:

Tip: you can also use the keyboard shortcuts CTRL+↑ or CTRL+↓ to navigate to another student. If you’re marking a FLOWmulti type flow, you can additionally use CTRL+← or CTRL+→ to navigate to another item in the exam paper. The same shortcuts will work on a Mac, using the CMD key instead of CTRL.

  1. If you did not submit scores for each individual student, you can submit all of your scores in bulk by exiting the marking tool and opening the Marking overview. On this screen, click Submit all:

  2. Successfully submitted scores are shown with a closed padlock in the upper right of the marking tool:

Submitted scores can also be seen underneath the Submitted column in the marking overview:

Changing a Score

Important: Remember to re-approve your rubrics and re-submit your scores after you have changed them, otherwise an overall grade for the student(s) cannot be calculated!

Before scores are submitted

If you have approved a rubric but haven’t submitted your scores yet, click the Reopen rubric button in the Rubrics panel:

After scores are submitted

You will need to ask a user with Manager access to the flow (i.e. a programme administrator) to unlock the submitted score for you.
